Last weekend, our sister rescue in NC suffered a tragedy, their home burned down.  They were able to escape and rescue all the animals.  They are now living in a small camper on the property and do not have room for the rescues in their care. We quickly mobilized to transport the rescues in their care to Richmond, VA.

Lady and Scamp came in as brother and sister last month. They had the same elderly owner for their entire 10 years of life, and when she passed away, they found themselves with nowhere to go.

They are both light orange, with Lady having a bit of sabling on her back. They have been spayed and neutered and are up to date on all vaccines.

Lady is the larger of the 2 at about 10-12 pounds. She is a bit of a nervous Nellie and gets scared, so she needs her brother for comfort and security. She will take a little time to trust you, so she may snip if you push her too fast. She also does not love getting brushed. She tolerates it for a few strokes, then gets irritated. Luckily, her undercoat is not super thick, so grooming is not as intensive.

Scamp is around 8 lbs, but he feels a bit thin, so he could use another pound or two to fill out his frame. His name definitely suits his personality. He is very friendly and darted out of the crate ready to give kisses! His undercoat is also not very dense, so grooming should not be labor-intensive. He let me brush him with no problem.

I am told they are crate-trained or prefer to sleep with you in your bed, but I let them roam last night, and they just found a comfy spot, curled up, and fell right asleep. They are puppy pad trained and seem to understand what the outside is for, as well. However, they’ve only been here for 18 hours, so we will see.

Both are in great condition and up to date on all shots, worming, and heartworm prevention.  Since they are on the older side, they would not be a good fit for a very active home, but they do seem to have a lot of energy for their age and would probably like going on walks or romping in the yard.

BIG NEWS! Our beloved senior foster boy, Bandit, has officially been adopted!

He’s gone home with the family who reached out about him almost immediately after his rescue, and followed along with his story through his long recovery – talk about destiny!

This incredible family has followed Bandit’s journey from day one, through all his ups and downs, for nearly four months. After his dental procedure in early July, they finally got to meet him, and it was clear that this was the family that Bandit was waiting for. Bandit spent the weekend with them, and he’s already living his best life! He is the only dog with a couple of cats as buddies, and he has a lovely young lady as his best friend.

To Bandit’s new family: Thank you for your unwavering interest, your patience, and for opening your hearts and home to this special guy. It just makes us so happy to see Bandit be loved and cherished. Happy forever, Bandit!

Last weekend, our sister rescue in NC suffered a tragedy, their home burned down.  They were able to escape and rescue all the animals.  They are now living in a small camper on the property and do not have room for the rescues in their care. 

Wally was dumped in the Walmart parking lot. Wally was in poor condition and is a parti pom. meaning he is part orange and part white. He is about 10 lbs.  He has no microchip. He does walk with a harness. He is blind in one eye, with signs of cataract appearing in the second eye. He seems to have difficulty in his rear, and this is noticeable from how he walks. He barks at doors or whenever he thinks he’s alone and can’t find you.

He was covered in feces and urine, so there are some healing skin conditions. He was so matted, we had no choice but to shave him, although we do not recommend shaving Pomeranians. It is unknown whether he is housebroken, but it is unlikely due to his condition. His age and past are unknown. He is very loving and gentle. He does not appear to be fixed. He appears to be elderly, but his teeth are in fairly good condition.

How to Groom a Pomeranian for Summer

How to Groom a Pomeranian for Summer

The harsh Summer sun can cause multiple possible problems. The sun has a gradual burning effect and may even change your Pomeranian’s fur color. A brown or black fur color may gain a reddish tinge. The sun may cause itchiness and/or peeling as the skin dries out.

To prevent such problems, use a good quality leave-in conditioner. The light spray helps prevent any harm, and if you select the right product, it will also work as a deodorizer, making your pet smell clean and fresh. You don’t need to use much. Spray and then brush his coat downwards so the conditioner is distributed properly.

Pomeranian Cuts For Summer

Don’t be tempted to have your Pomeranian clipped. Clipping your Pomeranian won’t keep him cool as the double coat works to insulate and keep your Pom cool in summer and warm in Winter.

Double-coated dog breeds like the Pomeranian often develop a condition called Post-Clipping Alopecia after clipping. If you must have a trimmed Pomeranian, talk to your Groomer about the best Pomeranian cuts for summer.

Ask the Groomer about trimming your Pomeranian with a short haircut using scissors. Cutting Pomeranian hair short with scissors instead of shaving is a better option. A show Pomeranian haircut is another option.

PSA for dog owners – we narrowly avoided tragedy.

We were out today, and when we got home, Romeo walked up to me with a plastic bag on his head!

A couple of nights ago, I finished a bag of Cheez-Its in the bedroom and threw the bag in my bedroom trash can. Romeo got into the trash and tried to get the crumbs left in the bag. Somehow he got the bag stuck on his head.

You could tell he struggled to get the bag off because items in the living room were strewn about. When I took the bag off, he was drenched and the bag was filled with condensation. The remaining crumbs were mush. He made his way to the water bowl and drank for about 2 minutes and when he finally stopped and walked away, he was wobbly and not walking straight.

He’s curled up next to me sleeping now, but my heart is still racing thinking about what might have happened if we were gone a little while longer.

How often do we toss things in the trash without thinking?
