Available – Ozzy & Poppy – Bonded Pair

BIG UPDATE 8/1

Ozzy & Poppy came to us from a rescue in NC that recently suffered a fire that destroyed the home. They were an owner surrender from Charlotte, but we do not have any information on them. Poppy has a microchip, but it was never registered.

Ozzy is approximately 10 years old and weighs 7 lbs. Poppy is slightly younger, at 8-9 years old, and weighs 8 lbs. They are both cream colored Poms with speckled noses and perfect pointed ears.

When they came to us, we were told they were not bonded and could be separated. With that information, they went to separate foster homes. However, when the foster moms showed up at the vet for a joint appointment to have them evaluated, it became clear almost immediately that these two had missed each other and had a strong bond. Their relationship is not known, but it is clear they care for each other, so we have started referring to them as big brother/little sister. Ozzy went home with Poppy and her foster mom, and they will be kept together until they are adopted as a pair.

Ozzy is very nervous and cowers when approached. Once you pick him up, he does love a good lap and will relax after a few minutes. He tends to stay behind the pack and keeps to himself. He is smart! I woke up on Tuesday morning to let everyone out, but I couldn’t find him! The little stinker had already let himself out of the doggie door even though they hadn’t been shown it yet.

Poppy is also very scared. She will avoid being picked up, and we have kept a leash on her the first few days to be able to catch her. She was willing to take treats from our fingers after we bribed her with some cheese. Poppy started to follow her foster mom around the house after a couple of days, but still doesn’t let her pick her up.

Both of them are very shy and scared. There was obviously some trauma in their past. They need a quiet, very patient home where everyone understands that they will take some time to build trust and is willing to give them the time and space they need.

Look how happy they are reunited!!

They were evaluated by our vet and received their vaccines. They are intact and have not been spayed/neutered. Both are in general good health, with the exception of their teeth! They don’t have many left, but the ones they do have are in very poor condition and extremely stinky. We are giving them a couple of weeks to settle in more, and plan on having their dentals done towards the end of August if they are approved for surgery. Due to their age, we may need to avoid surgery because of increased risks during anesthesia.

ADOPTED – Lady & the Scamp – Brother/Sister – 10 years old

Located in Richmond, VA.

Click here to read more about Lady

Click here to read more about Champ

Last weekend, our sister rescue in NC suffered a tragedy, their home burned down.  They were able to escape and rescue all the animals.  They are now living in a small camper on the property and do not have room for the rescues in their care. We quickly mobilized to transport the rescues in their care to Richmond, VA.

Lady and Scamp came in as brother and sister last month. They had the same elderly owner for their entire 10 years of life, and when she passed away, they found themselves with nowhere to go.

They are both light orange, with Lady having a bit of sabling on her back. They have been spayed and neutered and are up to date on all vaccines.

Lady is the larger of the 2 at about 10-12 pounds. She is a bit of a nervous Nellie and gets scared, so she needs her brother for comfort and security. She will take a little time to trust you, so she may snip if you push her too fast. She also does not love getting brushed. She tolerates it for a few strokes, then gets irritated. Luckily, her undercoat is not super thick, so grooming is not as intensive.

Scamp is around 8 lbs, but he feels a bit thin, so he could use another pound or two to fill out his frame. His name definitely suits his personality. He is very friendly and darted out of the crate ready to give kisses! His undercoat is also not very dense, so grooming should not be labor-intensive. He let me brush him with no problem.

I am told they are crate-trained or prefer to sleep with you in your bed, but I let them roam last night, and they just found a comfy spot, curled up, and fell right asleep. They are puppy pad trained and seem to understand what the outside is for, as well. However, they’ve only been here for 18 hours, so we will see.

Both are in great condition and up to date on all shots, worming, and heartworm prevention.  Since they are on the older side, they would not be a good fit for a very active home, but they do seem to have a lot of energy for their age and would probably like going on walks or romping in the yard.

Please reach out to the Pomeranian Club of Central Virginia if you are interested in fostering or adopting.

ADOPTED – Sasha – F – DOB 2/8/22 – CKC Registered

Sasha (aka The Cream Puff Comet, Lady Sassafras, Spinmaster General, or Your Highness of Happiness)

Like her bestie Peaches, Sasha is a 3-year-old, 8-pound Pomeranian with enough joy packed into her tiny frame to power a small village. But where Peaches jumps, Sasha spins. She spins for joy, she spins for meals, she spins because sometimes the world just needs a little twirl.

Sasha is the embodiment of cheerful, well-adjusted canine energy. No baggage, no diva behavior — just pure delight and an excellent sense of timing. She’s spayed, recently vetted, and ready to pirouette her way into someone’s life as a beloved pet and professional mood-booster.

She and Peaches are currently partners in cuteness, but they’re not a bonded pair. Sasha would do wonderfully as a solo floof or with a like-minded fur sibling who can appreciate her moves and not hog the limelight.

If you’re looking for a dog who radiates joy and treats every day like a celebration, Sasha is ready to be your fluffball soulmate.

Sash and Liberty are scheduled to be spayed and have dentals on 4/1. They will be able to go home the following week.

Unfortunately, his owner has been impacted by the federal return to work mandate and has a considerable commute. This necessitated him surrendering his beloved Poms due to not having the time to be with them. In total, 5 were surrendered and will be listed as they are available.

PENDING – Midas – M – 2y – DOB 12/8/22

Meet Midas (aka The Chocolate Teddy Bear, Love Muffin Extraordinaire, Chunky Mocha Monkey, The Cocoa Valentino) Midas is a 2-year-old, AKC registered, chocolate and tan Pomeranian who looks like he stepped straight out of a luxury plush toy collection and into your heart. Weighing just over 11 pounds (most of it charm), he’s the living embodiment of a chocolate teddy bear — soft, sweet, and impossible to resist. With his deep golden eyes and pillowy coat, Midas is a cuddle connoisseur.

He loves being with his people, whether that means snuggling on the couch, following you from room to room and when he gazes up at you, it’s with the soft, unshakable devotion of a dog who believes you are the best thing that’s ever happened to him. Midas has been neutered, his dental done, fully vaccinated and is ready for his next chapter. Like many gentlemen of romantic persuasion, he previously had a tendency to mark indoors, but that’s already improving post-neuter and with a little encouragement and consistency, he’s well on his way to full house manners. He would do best with an understanding family who is comfortable using stylish belly bands while he learns the rules. Affectionate, people-oriented, Midas is ready to sweep you off your feet. If you’re looking for a loyal companion with teddy bear looks and golden-hearted loyalty, look no further! This little chocolatey Casanova is ready to steal your heart.

He was being overfed just a little and ideally he should be under 10 pounds. He will be neutered and have his teeth cleaned on 3/28 and needs 10 days to recover. His shots (DHPP and Rabies) are up to date until 2027.

He will require regular grooming with a stainless steel comb to keep his thick undercoat from getting mats. A quick run-over with a slicker brush after combing will pick up any loose hairs and can easily be done while sitting on the couch watching your favorite shows.

Unfortunately, his owner has been impacted by the federal return to work mandate and has a considerable commute. This necessitated him surrendering his beloved Poms due to not having the time to be with them. In total, 5 were surrendered and will be listed as they are available.

Midas adoption fee is $600.

Rescue Fundraiser

We have recently taken in 6 Pomeranians whose owners could no longer care for them primarily due to recent changes in the government workforce.

Some need to be neutered/spayed and vaccine updates, while all of them need dental cleanings. Veterinary costs have exploded and dentals alone are running $300-400. Anything helps offset these costs and help us find these cuties their forever homes faster.

Thank You!

ADOPTED – Bear (DOB 1/8/20)

Bear is a very handsome, neutered, red sable Pom. He is very energetic and still has that puppy playfulness.  He goes crazy trying to get his sister to play with him, but she mostly ignores him. Please don’t hold his haircut against him, it is growing out!

He is quiet during the day while I’m working and stays in a bed by my desk.  He was confused hearing me on a conference call at first and kept barking because he couldn’t find the people talking in the house, but he’s ok now.

He is SUPER playful and has that puppy energy. He made friends quickly with another foster, Demi, and they get pretty rowdy wrestling each other. He is submissive and allowed Demi to be the alpha dog.

He can be sensitive about having the back of his neck touched until he knows you. He nipped us when trying to put a harness off/on.  We have been working with him on this and it seems to be a trust issue.  We don’t know if something happened to him in the past.  He got past it quickly and doesn’t do this to us anymore.

History

He is crate trained.

Bear was surrendered with his sister Truffles.  They were acquired during COVID and the son ended up being severely allergic.  They tried multiple treatments and methods, but just couldn’t get his allergies under control.  The family was devastated by having to make this agonizing decision.

He was shaved down for summer, but it is growing back.  You can see in the pictures that he has a gorgeous coat when he is grown in.

What does she need?

Bear should be in a home without young children. His tendency to nip at fingers when surprised by a touch on the back of the neck isn’t good for tiny hands.  Especially since the back of the neck is where kids like to pet first.

His family should be a little active to help him work off some of his energy either with walks or rowdy play sessions.  He likes to cuddle, but doesn’t sit still for long.

We would love for brother and sister to be adopted together (a discounted adoption rate would apply). However, after evaluation, they are not a bonded pair and can be separated.

Adoption fee is $500.

ADOPTED – Truffles (DOB 4/20/20)

Truffles is a gorgeous, spayed, brown & white Beaver Pom. She is extremely loving and affectionate. If she had her way she would loaf around all day in your lap until it was time for bed.  At night she is quite fond of spooning with her person.  Sometimes I must push her away so I can move my legs to the other direction.  LOL!  She is chunky and needs to drop 1-2 pounds from her tiny frame.

Her personality is very quiet and gentle. She is a bit timid until she gets to know you.

Truffles is learning her leash manners, but she is a Houdini and likes to slip out of her harness and run off on her own adventures.  After the second time, we double-harnessed her as a precaution (see pic).  That’s the first time we have ever had to do that.  Luckily, she is very chunky so while she is fast out the gate, she doesn’t have much stamina.

After the first couple days, she didn’t try to get away anymore. I believe it was just a fear response because of all the changes. She is getting used to the harness and leash, but she doesn’t like to go for walks. She just plants her fluffy little butt down and looks at us like we are crazy to think she will walk with the other peasants.

She is quite smart.  She figured out that we have a doggy door and how to use it without being shown.  Usually, we have to show a newcomer the door and push/coax them through it a few times until they get the hang of it.

History

She is crate trained. Her previous owner says she is great with kids.

She was surrendered with her brother Bear.  They were acquired during COVID and the son ended up being severely allergic.  They tried multiple treatments and methods, but just couldn’t get his allergies under control.  The family was devastated by having to make this agonizing decision.

She was shaved down for summer, but it is growing back.  You can see in the pictures she has a lovely coat when grown in.  Since she is a beaver, her nose and eyelids are brown instead of the usual black which compliments her coat very nicely.

What does she need?

Truffles would do well with someone that loves to cuddle, doesn’t mind sharing their lap, but doesn’t expect to be slobbered with kisses.  She gives kisses, just very demurely.

She needs a home that will work with her on her weight and get her into shape. She would be an excellent apartment dog.

We would love for brother and sister to be adopted together (a discounted adoption rate would apply). However, after evaluation, they are not a bonded pair and can be separated.

Adoption fee is $500.

ADOPTED – Demi (DOB 4/10/22 approx)

Demi is a pure bred (DNA Tested), 2.5 year old, 6 lb., Black and Tan girl with a super silky coat that you want to stroke for hours which is fine with her!  She has been spayed, microchipped, and is up to date with all her vaccines including a 3-year rabies certificate.

Demi’s personality is super sweet.  She loves being with her people, snuggling on the couch, or laying against your leg in bed.  She loves going on walks and is ok on a leash.  She tends to pull on the lead and could use some work on heeling.  She gets along with other dogs, and we are told she loves to splash around in water. She would make a great therapy or agility dog.

History

Demi has had 3 homes in her short years through no fault of hers.  Her first mom had her for a year but had to go into assisted living with no dogs allowed.  Her second mom had her for a little over a year, but sadly, she passed away.  Her daughter planned on keeping her, but she works full time and after 10 hours alone every day, Demi would work herself up so much she would make herself sick, so she made the heartbreaking decision to find her a new home more suited to her needs.

In September 2023 while playing with her mom’s grandson, she broke her rear leg in 4 places (ouch!). He had her in a sling and it sounds like she jumped out and landed on the concrete patio. It was surgically repaired, and you would never know it happened without an x-ray showing the hardware in her leg.  She does like to jump up and down from the couch and recliner so stairs for the couch would be a recommended investment.  Post-op she did have 2 seizures.  This Is not uncommon with the small breeds as their blood sugar can drop very fast and appetites are often decreased immediately following surgery.  She did see a neurologist and had a full work up that found no underlying cause.  This would be something to make not of with your vet for future procedures (dental or other surgeries).

Grooming can be a challenge.  She has allowed us to brush her a little, but we are told mani-pedi’s are a 2 person job.  We had to clean her bum, and it took 2 of us.

When she was surrendered, we were told she was terrified of feet, but we have not experienced this.  She follows me around the house right at my feet and lays next to them on the couch.

What does Demi need?

Most importantly, she must have a home where she is not left alone for long stretches of time every day. If you have a home where everyone goes to work/school every day, she is not for you.  I think she would like another dog to play with also.  She has tried to initiate play with our Poms, but they are 17 & 11 and don’t play much.

With her tendency to jump on/off furniture and follow around on your feet, young children are not recommended.  Children over 12 would be okay as long as they understand how delicate Poms bones can be.

She seems equally interested in spending time with both my husband and me so she would likely be a great family Pom and not be attached to only one person.

I would really like to see her go to a family or couple under 65.  She has already lost 2 moms due to old age in her short life.  Poms expected life span is 14-16 years, so I would like her next home to be her last home.

Adoption fee is $500.

The New Canopy is Up!

Upcoming Fundraiser/Raffle – January 12

Our annual fundraising raffle is only two short months away.  The raffle is held during the Celebrate Virginia Cluster in Fredericksburg, VA.  This year it falls on January 12.

We had such a good response pre-selling tickets for people unable to attend, that we will be doing that again this year.  Last years winners were in Maryland and West Virginia!

This year is going to be very exciting!  We have a wonderful group of small business owners donating items for the raffle and it is definitely going to be our biggest and best raffle ever!!  Start saving for tickets now (I know I am)!

In the upcoming weeks I will be posting links to our generous benefactors store fronts on Etsy or their website.  I implore you to please check out their stores while you are Christmas shopping this year.  Take a moment to let them know in the comments during check out that you found them through the Virginia Pom Club so they know how much we all appreciate their donations.

If you have something you would like to donate to the raffle, please contact us via Facebook or through the links on our site.  It does not have to be Pomeranian or even dog related!  It can be new, vintage, big or small!  We will be combining items into baskets.

As always, thank you for your continued support.  Your generosity throughout the past years have allowed us to rescue many dogs that had special needs that may not have found homes otherwise.

Cody – Gone to the Rainbow Bridge

Cody

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE APPLYING TO ADOPT CODY

If you are looking for a serious lap dog & complete cuddle bug look no further! Cody is 8 years old, 8 pounds and addicted to love!

He is a gorgeous, rare, red Pomeranian and his fur is silky soft (more like hair). He came to us as part of a 9-dog surrender from a “backyard breeder”.  He has one of the best temperaments I’ve seen.  Cody loves to play and is obsessed with his Care Bear or Tatty Teddy.  We’ve never had a Pom that loves toys as much as he does.  There are usually at least 4 toys on our bed because he loves to sit on the bed and play!  Play Video -Cody the toy hoarder

Cody would do best in a quiet low-key home. Ideally, we would like to see him with an older couple that is home to more to give him extra cuddles!  He is not a licker and doesn’t really give kisses, but he insists on resting his head on your leg while watching your favorite shows.  I have an obsessive licker, so this is a wonderful quality for me!  Play Video – Cody the Lover

He gets along with everybody 2 or 4 legged.  He doesn’t socialize with the other dogs much unless Romeo steals his care bear and he is waiting for an opportunity to snatch it back.

Cody has some health issues that will need to be taken into consideration before placing an application to adopt him.  We will be very selective in placing him, so please review his needs below.

  1. He had hip surgery in 2016 and has a little bit of a “bow-legged” walk. It is good therapy for him to go on short walks to build up the muscle in the hip/leg area to keep him strong.
  2. He has minor arthritis in the hip due to the surgery and his age, another reason for the walks.
  3. He must be in a home with carpeting or significant area rugs. He slips on slick, shiny hardwoods which aggravates his hip which in turn makes him limp more and makes it harder for him to maintain his balance which makes him slip more.
  4. A single story house is preferred.  Mutli-level is ok if the stairs are carpeted and he’s only going up for bed and down in the morning.
  5. He has a heart murmur that is a Grade 3-4.  He takes furosemide (reduces excess fluid from building around his lungs/heart) and enalapril (helps the heart beat more efficiently) every morning. The cost of these meds is approx. $15/month. Giving him his meds is very easy.  He looks forward to it and swallows them down in two seconds!  He also gets children’s cough suppressant as needed.
  6. You must be within 100 miles of Richmond, VA for this adoption due to his health issues.

Who gets rescued and why?

pomeranian-silhouette-clip-art-1Before you pass judgement on a rescue that you perceive as “picking and choosing” only to take “cute & quickly adoptable” dogs, please read the following and reconsider your judgments.

Recently there was an abused and neglected Pom that was taken in by a rescue who unfortunately, despite heroic efforts, weren’t able to save his life, but were able to provide him with more love than he’s ever known in his short life.  It takes extraordinary people to be able to provide these dogs love and care knowing that you are probably the last person that will have the opportunity to befriend these precious Poms.  While it is fulfilling, it is also emotionally taxing and no one should feel guilty for not being able to open up their home and hearts to severely ill animals that demand around the clock or hospice care.

That being said, some of the comments hit a little too close to home for me.  They were not made with the intention of being negative, but they hurt just the same.

The comments made were worded differently, but all carried the same message.  The sentiment was that rescues that “pick and choose” the dogs they receive by avoiding sick dogs or only taking in “cute, quickly adopted” dogs were terrible and run by horrible people.  It was borderline offensive to me, but basically just hurt my feelings.  Not just on my behalf, but on behalf of the other fosters in my group or other groups in similar situations to ours.

Our group, and me specifically as Rescue Chair, have the unenviable task of deciding which Poms we can take into our rescue program at any given time.  Every time I have to say “No”, it is not done lightly.  I understand that my decision may have negative consequences.

While our rescue program has grown these past 5 years and is now a 501C(3), it is still extremely small.  We have 2 “full time” fosters that always have a few in their care, and just a couple “part time” fosters who will occasionally take a foster, but not on a regular or consistent basis.  We live in cities with limits on how many animals we can have at a given time (in my case it is 5) and we run at the max allowed.  Our annual budget is less than $3,000 and any special care has to be paid for by fundraising which we are constantly doing and always trying to come up with new ways to increase our “medical cost kitty”.  Adoption fees seldom cover the actual costs incurred. We pay out of our personal pockets for food (even special diets), treats, toys, shampoo, vitamins, grooming, gas, and anything else not veterinarian related unless it is donated or sent from our Amazon Wish List.  It is a full time passion on top of the full time jobs we already work.

Even with these limitations, we have taken HW positive Poms, puppy mill Poms, Poms with congestive heart failure, collapsing tracheas, broken legs, diabetes, luxating patella’s, blind, deaf, missing a jaw (he’s been with me for 2 years now), and even a paralyzed pom in a wheelchair.  We can’t do them all at once and we can’t take them all the time, but when we can, we do!  And every time we do take a special needs or senior pom, we have to consider if we are the best resource for this pom? Or is there another organization that can better handle their needs?  Will this most likely be a long term foster?  If so, how many Poms are we going to have to turn away because we simply do not have the space to foster another legally? The only absolute rule we have when taking in fosters is that we will not take any Pom that has bitten or shown unnecessary aggression.  We don’t have the resources or capabilities to take them on.

So again, before you pass judgment on rescues that say “No” to certain poms, please consider their reasons.  If you’d like them to be able to say “Yes” more often, consider becoming a foster home or donating to their medical fund.  We have one donor that setup automatic PayPal donations for $5.00 every month.  You may not think that is much, but her donation covers the cost of a little one receiving HeartWorm and Flea Prevention meds every month!

If you would like to set up a recurring donation, or a one time gift, please click here!
