Fostering – An Essay from a Foster Mom

s4002nsopopbwyr4I’ll be the first to admit that fostering is hard. In my experience, the first is super hard because you’re just figuring out how to love another being, but still let them go. That was Frisco, now Cody. Then I had Mickey. He was a little fussy and dad babysat most of the time i had him so it was easier.

Then came Ashton. Ashton was my potato. I loved that little guy with all of me. He needed me and I gave him all of me. It was one if the hardest things I’ve ever done.

Wade and Johnny came next. They were a different sort, I knew they would be adopted quickly so I was able to stay detached, but still care for them.

Jasper… He is quirky and a pain, in the best way. I missed him when I came home and didn’t see his head pop up in the window, but he was young and energetic and I have no doubt he will be cared for.

Now… Bandit and Rascal. I love them. I am connected to them and I think they love me, based on their wiggly butts when I come home. I am in love with Bandit and Rascal and if I didn’t have a rescue minded heart, I would keep them.

If I did that though, my heart and house would be above capacity. I wouldn’t be able to help anyone else.

The most important thing when fostering is knowing what is really best for them.

Maybe it is you and that’s awesome! Maybe you just think it’s you and if you really consider it, you’ll realize that even though you love this tiny being to infinity and beyond… you know there is someone else who could love them just as much as you do, while you keep room for the next pup who needs you.

Fosters Needed in the RVA Area

We are receiving a total of 13 Poms this coming week and are in need of caring homes for them while they are vetted and waiting for their Fur-ever homes.

FOSTERING Means:

1) Foster parents get first dibs for adoption as well as the option of a payment plan!

2) Foster parents are given all supplies needed to care for their foster dog if needed.

3) Foster parents receive support and advice when needed.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Provide a temporary, safe and loving home ranging anywhere from a few days to several months as we find the perfect home for the animal.

2) Help break bad habits using positive re-enforcement as well as train those with minimal or no training at all to help place them in a loving home.

3) To speak with and show a dog to a potential adopter. Meeting place can be elsewhere if you’re not comfortable showing at your home.

4) Are open to home inspection while fostering.

5) To take to a designated vet for on-going medical treatment like vaccinations, dental or other medical needs.  Our vet is located off Staples Mill Road, but it is possible to use a personal vet if they are willing to offer discounted services for a rescue.

6) Notify us immediately in the event the dog is sick or lost.

Incoming!! Amazon Wish List

We have 9 Poms coming into rescue!   All are coming as a result of an elderly couple being separated by the death of one partner and the surviving partner not being able to care for them and being moved into a care facility.

We are very small and usually do not take more than 2 or 3 at a time due to resource limitations, but we cannot allow them to go into the pound in Lynchburg so we are calling out for assistance to our network.

We could use some food and cleaning supplies before they arrive!  We use the Costco brand food for small breed and it is available on Amazon.  Here is the link to our Amazon Wish List:

ADOPTED 6/2/17 Available Rescue – Gypsy – Retired Therapy Dog, AKC, Canine Good Citizen!

Richmond, VA – Gypsy is an owner surrender (surrendered to us on 2/25).  Her previous owners have an Aussie that was starting to intimidate her & they were afraid he would hurt her. They got her as a puppy at 11 months & have had her ever since.
Her birthday is 2/28/2008 and she just turned 9 and weighs in at 8.25 lbs. She is AKC registered, and is a retired certified (TDI) therapy dog.  She also has her CGC (Canine Good Citizen) from AKC .  We have all her paperwork, Vet history, also a newspaper article featuring her as a therapy dog.
Overall, she is in very good health.  She just had a dental in April and her heart and knees are both good (common problem areas for Poms).  However, she was attacked by a larger dog who picked her up and shook her in 2009.  In addition to traumatizing her, this attack appears to have made her susceptible to some arthritis in the back of her neck that needs to be treated (think “old football injury” and doggie Aleve).  She has been prescribed Metacam .25 once a day at a cost of about $35.00 every 4-6 weeks.  She will need to take this for the rest of her life as she is in pain without it and becomes very withdrawn and timid.
She has a history of ruptured anal glands and requires that her anal glands be expressed every 6 months. You can do this yourself at home. You can have your vet or groomer show you how.
We took her to the South of the James Farmers Market for the first day of the summer market. The market was very busy with tons of people and dogs of all sizes and breeds, but she wasn’t overly timid and she let people approach her and hold her.  She does get nervous around larger dogs.
She uses the doggie door without problems and is housebroken.  When we let her out into the large yard, she loves to run around the yard until she is out of breath!  Inside, she is content to be curled up next to my legs/feet on the couch.
She has decided that I am her “person” and is very attached.  She has her head sticking out the door to greet me before I cross the threshold when I come home.  When I’m home, she stays with me wherever I am.  She sleeps in bed with us at night, usually pressed against my legs. She also has a habit of walking very close to me and circling.  Very easy to trip over her if not careful.
Gypsy needs someone that will be patient with her.  She still shies away when you reach out to touch her overhand.  The best way is to start by scratching under her chin, after that, it’s all good.  She will give kisses, but only if you are laying down at her level after she trusts you.
She needs to be adopted to a no young children home (20 lbs).  She loves going with us in the car and is great on the leash.  She would be a great travel companion as she is very quiet.  If there was a playful dog in the house, I think she would engage with them after a while.  Our dogs just aren’t big “players”.
Gypsy’s adoption fee is $300.

RIP Special Agent Gibbs – 2/25/17

This post is very hard to make.  Gibbs left us this past Saturday.  He fought so hard, but it was too much on his little body.  We only had him a short time, but he will live in our hearts always.

ADOPTED!!! – TANK 07/2014

Please share this post and help us get the word out on this guy.

What a sweetie!
He is a throwback Pom at about 13 pounds. A nice clear orange.  He would be an awesome family dog!

Tank would love to go for daily walks and maybe a game of indoor fetch on those dark, rainy evenings, but he’d be just as happy hanging out with his people on the couch.
He would be okay with other dogs and kids to play with!  He is very patient and his foster mom says that it is tested constantly with a little obnoxious puppy that likes to cause trouble.  He knows sit and comes when called, he is working on other commands, but it’s hard with so many other dogs at his foster home.
We don’t have any paperwork on this guy, but they thought he was about 10. His age is a bit suspect as he has a full mouth of sturdy teeth, no white along the muzzle and no indicators that he is in fact that old.  Perhaps closer to 7 or 8.
Click here to send an email or send a message to Margaret McKee of Goochland on FB to contact his foster mom directly, or message us here for the phone number.  His foster mom’s PC is on the fritz so please include your phone number so she can call you.
Tank’s adoption fee is $200.

ADOPTED 06/15/14!! – Ollie

****ADOPTED****

Ollie comes to us all the way from Delaware.  Tragically his mom passed away in April leaving dad alone to raise their 3 children.  Ollie was a true Mamma’s boy and the family made the difficult decision to surrender him so he could find a home where he could be that again.
Ollie is a 5-7 year old, red sable male, approximately 8 pounds.  He has long legs which make him appear larger than he really is.   His fur is growing out right now from a previous cut, so he looks a little shaggy.  His bark is very low and gruff making it possible that he has been debarked.  We do know that when his family adopted him about 4 years ago, he had been abused and had cigarette burns covering his head.
In spite of everything, he is a very sweet and loving boy.  It took him all of 30 minutes after he sniffed around the house to decide it was a quite comfortable place and I would do just fine as his new mommy.
He is excellent on a leash, housebroken, he stood still for his bath, and he loved being towel dried!  Every time I started to pull the towel away, he stuck his head back in it until I rubbed some more and he stretched his head up towards the ceiling in appreciation.  He got along fine with my dogs and came from a home with a large dog, a cat, and 2 bunnies that he got along with just fine.
Ollie has had dental surgery, been neutered and has had his shots and vet checkup.  He has a clean bill of health and is ready for his new home.

Willie’s Diet – Our Obese Rescue Pomeranian

Clockwise from top;
Sweet Potato, Mixed Frozen Veggies, Oatmeal, Natural Choice Lite,
Merrick Senior Medley, Fat Free Yogurt.  Center:  Carrots for snack.
There have been a few inquiries about what we are feeding Willie to help him shed a few pounds.  He seems to be doing well with the change in diet and has adjusted without any stomach upset.

He has gone from 14.5 to 14 in 2 weeks.  I had hoped to be a few more ounces along, but Mother Nature threw a wrench in those plans with this winter in ?March weather.  Only managed to get 3 walks in.

He is still VERY food motivated and a little piggy!  But his meals are twice as large as he was receiving using only dry kibble (he was getting 1/4 cup twice a day), so he is getting fuller and not so much a piggy.

He actually walked by our dogs bowl without diving in after I forgot to pick it up.  I was shocked!  The first day he was here he ate all 3 of our dogs dinner before I realized it.  And that was after he had eaten his!

Please comment below with any diet tips, tricks, questions you may have regarding feeding overweight or obese dogs.

Keep reading for detailed diet recipe

Willie’s meals & snacks

• 1 Tbsp Fat Free Yogurt, plain
• 1 Tbsp Oatmeal
• 1 Tbsp Frozen / Fresh Vegetables, carrots, peas, green beans, broccoli, little amount of corn
• 1 Tbsp Sweet Potatoes
• 1/2 can High protein, low calorie food, currently Merrick Grain Free Senior Medley
• 1/8 cup High quality dry food, about 10-12 kernels for crunch. currently Nutro Natural Choice – Lite – Lamb & Whole Brown Rice
• 3-5 Fresh Carrots, Snacks – # varies depending on carrot size/width, other snacks given
• 3-5 Green Beans, Snacks -# varies based on size, other snacks given
Notes
When all ingredients are mixed together it makes 1/2 cup.

Willie is fed this twice a day in addition to receiving plenty of carrots and green beans as treats.

Each meal has the wet and dry food as a base.  The other ingredients can be increased, decreased, left out as desired as long as meal totals 1/2 cup.  I occasionally mix in a couple slices of banana or some chopped red apple.

He also gets 2 – 5 calorie mini bones cookies at bedtime (these are what his mom gave him, so we won’t take these away, we just cut him from 3 to 2).

He seems to enjoy the moister diet. His water consumption has decreased to a normal level.

I either make up a breakfast bowl for him and place in the fridge for the next day while I’m making his dinner, or

Mix up a few days worth in Tupperware and measure out approx 1/2 cup at mealtimes (adding the dry kernels to the top).

ADOPTED!!!! Available Rescue – Topper

Topper is a very sweet 10 year old boy.

Don’t let his age fool you!  He is super sweet and can spend hours on his back letting you rub his tummy!  He has years of love left to give and would love a nice lap to spend it in.

He is crate trained and gets along with other dogs.
Check out his videos on YouTube:

Available Rescue – Sophie, a very special senior girl

Sophie is an absolute joy to have around.  She rolls right over when daddy comes near her demanding a belly rub!  She absolutely LOVES car rides and cruising Stony Point Fashion Park Mall.  She goes absolutely bonkers when she sees the harness come out.  No collars for this girl, at 8 years old she has some problems with a collapsed trachea.
She gets along fine with our dogs and sleeps at the foot of the bed with them.  Although, I sometimes wake to find her on top of my head.  Though she would much rather be an only child and treated like the Princess she is.
Big dogs are a bit of a no-no with this little one.  A German Shepherd stepped on her foot and broke it when she was a puppy so it’s understandable.  We have taken her out around big dogs and she keeps her distance.  Kids under the age of 10 are also not for her.  She doesn’t like to touched by kids and will snap at them.
She will need to be fed a high quality food and occasionally some olive oil to keep her from getting very bad dandruff.  She has a large 3 inch swath of hair that extends from her neck to her rear where the hair growth is stunted at about 1/4 inch.  This could be caused by skin damage from razor burn if she was shaved to close to the skin during a grooming or it could be a sign of Black Skin Disease (BSD).  Her owner said it had been that way for about 7 months.
Sophie is a bit of a nervous dog.  When  she came to us she was on Prozac, but we have weaned her off.  She will need a relaxed, quiet child free home. She would do best with a quiet couple that spends a lot of time with her.  She is an EXCELLENT traveler.  We took her on a 30 hour round trip drive to upper Maine for Thanksgiving and she was perfectly content.  Her potty training is impeccable!  My dream home for her would be an older couple of snowbirds that cruise around in their RV.

Sophie’s adoption fee is $250.

*ADOPTED* DOLLAR – Our sweet rescue boy looking for a family. Likes kids, cats, dogs, people….

Pomeranian Club of Central Virginia Facebook page

I can’t say enough about how sweet and loving he is!  He is super gentle even when taking treats from your hand.  I think he is the quietest, most outgoing and gentle Pom I have ever had in my home, even more than my own dogs.  He would make an excellent therapy dog.
Dollar is estimated to be about 5 years old. He is in excellent health and our vet thought he was half that age. He is on the large side, at 13 pounds, but has a beautiful red coat and a “foxy” face. He came to us with a version of a lion cut, but it is growing out, so don’t hold that against him.
We picked him up on September 9 as an owner surrender and he’s been in our home since.  The family he came from decided that the kids were older and they no longer wanted a dog.
He is definitely a people person. When I let all the dogs out for a potty break (3 Poms and a MinPin/Chi), when they come back in, everyone tears right past me, except Dollar.  Dollar always stops, stands up and says “Hi” before he follows the others.
When we took him to the farmers market he had to say hi to every dog and half the people he saw.  If someone was sitting down, he stood up and nuzzled them to get pats.

Our home is not extremely active. He has been content playing fetch with in the house, but for the long term, I think he needs more activity. I think he would do very well with a family with kids to play with or a couple that likes take walks. I think he’d be okay with every other day walks/exercise and on the off days a little indoor playtime should be ample for his exercise needs.
He will give kisses, but you have to ask and he only gives one or two.  He shows affection by leaning in to you or nestling his head almost under you then sinking down for a snuggle.  He does not lick very much (which my husband and I consider a plus).
He is also very quiet. He barks briefly when we come home or when the doorbell rings (and of course when the mailman drops the mail in the box). We live on a busy street and he doesn’t bark at the outside world.
We are gone to work for about 9.5 hours and have left him lose in the house with our 3 dogs. He has not had a problem holding it most of the time. We do keep a washable puppy pad out for emergencies.
He has been neutered, had a dental (no missing teeth, they are gorgeous!), a checkup (he is heartworm negative) and all his shots updated.  His adoption fee is $250.00
