Fosters Needed in the RVA Area

If you are in the Richmond, VA area and interested in being a foster parent for a Pom in need, please email Krystyna Lineberry using our gmail account, PCCV.InFoster-Homes-Needed-250x300c or message on Facebook.

We are receiving a total of 13 Poms this coming week and are in need of caring homes for them while they are vetted and waiting for their Fur-ever homes.

FOSTERING Means:

1) Foster parents get first dibs for adoption as well as the option of a payment plan!

2) Foster parents are given all supplies needed to care for their foster dog if needed.

3) Foster parents receive support and advice when needed.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Provide a temporary, safe and loving home ranging anywhere from a few days to several months as we find the perfect home for the animal.

2) Help break bad habits using positive re-enforcement as well as train those with minimal or no training at all to help place them in a loving home.

3) To speak with and show a dog to a potential adopter. Meeting place can be elsewhere if you’re not comfortable showing at your home.

4) Are open to home inspection while fostering.

5) To take to a designated vet for on-going medical treatment like vaccinations, dental or other medical needs.  Our vet is located off Staples Mill Road, but it is possible to use a personal vet if they are willing to offer discounted services for a rescue.

6) Notify us immediately in the event the dog is sick or lost.

Incoming!! Amazon Wish List

We have 9 Poms coming into rescue!   All are coming as a result of an elderly couple being separated by the death of one partner and the surviving partner not being able to care for them and being moved into a care facility.

We are very small and usually do not take more than 2 or 3 at a time due to resource limitations, but we cannot allow them to go into the pound in Lynchburg so we are calling out for assistance to our network.

We could use some food and cleaning supplies before they arrive!  We use the Costco brand food for small breed and it is available on Amazon.  Here is the link to our Amazon Wish List:

6 All-Natural Ingredients To Help Calm An Anxious Dog

https://iheartdogs.com/6-all-natural-ingredients-to-help-calm-an-anxious-dog/

#1 – Valerian

Valerian is a sedative herb that relieves tension, anxiety, and over-excitability in dogs. Valerian can be bought dried or in capsule form and given to the dog orally, wrapped in a piece of cheese, or with a treat. Our favorite option for easy administration would be as a soft chew (Amazon link). Give it to the dog before situations that tend to cause anxiety and over-excitability in your dog.

#2 – Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that naturally rises in the bloodstream when animals sleep. Giving it to them when they are awake can help calm them down during stressful situations. It may be especially effective in dogs with separation anxiety issues, as its calming effects may last up to 8 hours. Be sure to read the ingredients before sharing your melatonin – it may contain Xylitol or other ingredients that are toxic for dogs.

#3 – Lavender (Scent)

You probably already know that the scent of lavender helps you to relax and fall asleep, but did you realize it can have the same calming effect on your dog? The scent of lavender actually reduces the body’s production of cortisol, the stress hormone, and it doesn’t have the same sedative effects of some of the other ingredients on this list. A drop or two of lavender oil in a place where your dog can’t ingest it will help relieve their anxiety.

#4 – Passionflower

Passionflower has been used since the mid 1500s as a sleep aid and sedative. Studies have shown that it can actually lower your brain activity and boost levels of GABA, a feel-good chemical. In humans, it’s been shown to be as effective as benzodiazepine medications such as Valium and Xanax in treating anxiety. It also has less of a sedative effect than other herbs. This can be a great option for highly anxious dogs. For easy administration, we like these soft chews that contain Passionflower.

#5 – Lemon Balm

A member of the mint family, lemon balm has been used since the Middle Ages to soothe nerves, relieve indigestion, and remedy insomnia. This sedative herb is effective in treating excitability and anxiety in dogs.

#6 – Chamomile

If you’ve ever suffered from insomnia, you’ve probably tried chamomile tea to help you sleep. Chamomile calms the nerves and induces sleep. It can also calm the stomach and ease digestive problems. You can give chamomile tea to your dog or soak a dog treat in the tea. Another option is a soft chew that contains chamomile.

All Natural Anxiety Relief

Did you know you can get several of these ingredients, plus a few more, in our Project Paws™ Advanced Calming soft chews on Amazon Prime? (also available in the iHeartDogs store here) They’re formulated to relieve your dog’s anxiety, nervousness, hyperactivity, tension, or stress related to traveling, thunderstorms, fireworks, vet visits, introducing new pets, or a change in their routine.

High-potency natural ingredients are properly formulated for optimal results, and dogs love the turkey flavored soft chew! It’s gentle enough to be used as a daily supplement and powerful enough to work as needed in stressful situations. And if that isn’t awesome enough, each purchase feeds 7 shelter dogs!

Tips for Removing Mats for Newbies

Image result for matted pomeranianPoms are notorious for getting mats under their arms and legs and behind their ears.  Sometimes it seems like they appear overnight and are the size of marbles before we know what hits us!

If you have looked online at all you have probably not just read, but been screamed at to not shave your pom, no matter what!!!  Well, while this is excellent advice as shaving can cause permanent damage to your Poms coat, it is not always reasonable.

If you are adopting Pom from a shelter or found a stray on the street, you may have no choice but to use clippers to remove excess mats.  Excessive matting can not only be painful to any dog, it can also cause serious health problems by cutting off circulation to limbs, forcing hair into the eyes, or preventing waste from falling free of the animal causing urine burns and infected anal glands.

This method is simple and I call it “dissecting the mat”.  It can help salvage the hair that may be able to be freed from the mat without causing much discomfort to your pet.

You can do on your own in between trips to the groomer, or if you elect to do your own grooming (only use sharp, hair cutting scissors):

  • Isolate the mat you are going to work on.  Try to move all lose hair away from it.
  • With your fingers, see if you can work any of hair free of the mat.
  • Open the scissors and slip one end under the mat at a 90 degree angle (Perpendicular) to the skin and cut through the mat.
  • Move the scissors so that you can cut a second time through the mat, crossing the first cut.  The mat should now be in about 4 sections.
  • You can keep cutting through the mat as much as you feel is needed to loosen it up.
  • Using a steel comb, gently try to work the mat free, one section at a time.  The most important thing to remember is that it can be quite painful if you are pulling the hair to tightly.  If possible, try to use your fingers to hold the fur between the skin and the mat firmly so when you are tugging the mat free, you are not tugging the skin.

Keep in mind that while this method of “dissecting the mat” may help free the majority of mats without resorting to cutting it out, you will come across those that you will need to just cut out for one reason or another, it could be too thick, too big, in too sensitive an area, or just for times sake, etc…

If you do need to cut a mat out, gently hold the mat taught, hold the scissors parallel to the skin and as close to the bottom of the mat as you can get, then gently snip away the mat being careful to avoid the skin.  You may want to try a pass with thinning shears to see if the mat pulls away with being completely severed.

The main thing to remember is to take your time, hair grows back if you cut it a little crooked, if you need someone to help keep your pom calm and distracted while you work, by all means do so and always follow up with love and treats!
