Wheat Free Pumpkin Dog Biscuits

Makes 3-4 dozen with a 1×2″ cookie cutter.
Ingredients:
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. organic canned pumpkin
  • 2 tbsp. powdered milk
  • 1/4 tsp. sea salt
  • 1 tsp. dried parsley leaves
  • 2 1/2 c. rice flour
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º.
Whisk together the eggs and pumpkin puree until smooth. Stir in powdered milk, salt, and parsley until well combined. Add rice flour a little at a time until you have a firm, dry dough. I used a rubber spatula to fold in the flour until the dough got too tough, and then I switched to kneading with my hands.
Roll out the dough to about 1/4″ thickness, and use a dog bone cookie cutter (or any other cute but smallish cutter) to cut out shapes, and place them on an ungreased cookie sheet. Pop them in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Flip over the biscuits, and bake for another 10-15 minutes until baked through and turning golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool completely before feeding to your pup.

ADOPTED!!! – TANK 07/2014

Please share this post and help us get the word out on this guy.

What a sweetie!
He is a throwback Pom at about 13 pounds. A nice clear orange.  He would be an awesome family dog!

Tank would love to go for daily walks and maybe a game of indoor fetch on those dark, rainy evenings, but he’d be just as happy hanging out with his people on the couch.
He would be okay with other dogs and kids to play with!  He is very patient and his foster mom says that it is tested constantly with a little obnoxious puppy that likes to cause trouble.  He knows sit and comes when called, he is working on other commands, but it’s hard with so many other dogs at his foster home.
We don’t have any paperwork on this guy, but they thought he was about 10. His age is a bit suspect as he has a full mouth of sturdy teeth, no white along the muzzle and no indicators that he is in fact that old.  Perhaps closer to 7 or 8.
Click here to send an email or send a message to Margaret McKee of Goochland on FB to contact his foster mom directly, or message us here for the phone number.  His foster mom’s PC is on the fritz so please include your phone number so she can call you.
Tank’s adoption fee is $200.

You Can Prevent Dog Bites

This picture is exactly why we advocate educating children and their parents on the do’s and don’ts of kids around dogs. Small children are at face level with a lot of dogs. When we are out in public with our children and there are dogs present, even thought they are on leashes, we need to pay attention to their body language. Dogs give warnings. It is true, they do not want to bite. Their warnings come in body language and in vocal growls. Pay attention folks. Most bites are preventable.

Happy Fourth of July

ADOPTED 7/5/14!!! – CASPER (Central Virginia)

Casper has been with us since Father’s Day weekend and is one of the most loving rescues we’ve had.

His idea of a perfect day is doing anything you are doing as long as he is doing it with you.  Be warned!  Once you roll him on his back for belly rubs, you better be in for the long haul.  He can stay like that for what feels like an eternity just letting you gently caress his belly.  He enjoys sleeping at your feet in bed and snuggling on the couch.  He does very well on the leash and adores car rides. One mention of his name and he is by your side before you can blink!

Casper is a gorgeous cream color, and weighs in at a healthy 6.9 pounds.  He just turned 5 in May so he still has a decade left in him to be someones companion.  His previous owners did not take care of his teeth which led to overcrowding from adult and baby teeth that had not fallen out, so we had to have 23 teeth pulled.  As a result, he does not have any front teeth to keep his tongue in his mouth, so it sticks out a little (which is quite adorable).  However, that is not as bad as it may sound.  He still retains his back molars so he can chew small bites kibble and would do well on a mixed diet of kibble and soft food.

He tested negative for heart worms and has a very strong heartbeat with no signs of murmur and great patellas.  He has recently been neutered and had all of his shots updated.  He did experience quite a bit of post surgical pain which led to him not being able to stand up 2 days after surgery.  Our vet changed his pain medication and he is now doing fine and is able to go to a new home.  In the future, his vet should be made aware of this if he is to have any procedure done as this is not a typical response.

When he arrived he did have 2 ticks on him (one in his ear canal).  He tested with a very faint positive for Ehrlichia & Lyme and had had ear infections in both ears.  He has received medication for the ear infection and has not shown any symptoms for Ehrlichia or Lyme requiring treatment.  This indicates the positive results were most likely caused by the toxins from the current ticks and will have completely worked out of his system in few weeks.

He has a curious habit of leaning a bit to the left.  His tongue sticks out to the left.  When you hold him, he relaxes to the left.  He has a tiny hitch in his step (that has improved after treating his ears), which gives him a different gait than your usual Pom.  Our vet examined him and feels this is likely due to a previous unknown injury.

Casper’s Adoption Fee is $300.

ADOPTED 06/15/14!! – Ollie

****ADOPTED****

Ollie comes to us all the way from Delaware.  Tragically his mom passed away in April leaving dad alone to raise their 3 children.  Ollie was a true Mamma’s boy and the family made the difficult decision to surrender him so he could find a home where he could be that again.
Ollie is a 5-7 year old, red sable male, approximately 8 pounds.  He has long legs which make him appear larger than he really is.   His fur is growing out right now from a previous cut, so he looks a little shaggy.  His bark is very low and gruff making it possible that he has been debarked.  We do know that when his family adopted him about 4 years ago, he had been abused and had cigarette burns covering his head.
In spite of everything, he is a very sweet and loving boy.  It took him all of 30 minutes after he sniffed around the house to decide it was a quite comfortable place and I would do just fine as his new mommy.
He is excellent on a leash, housebroken, he stood still for his bath, and he loved being towel dried!  Every time I started to pull the towel away, he stuck his head back in it until I rubbed some more and he stretched his head up towards the ceiling in appreciation.  He got along fine with my dogs and came from a home with a large dog, a cat, and 2 bunnies that he got along with just fine.
Ollie has had dental surgery, been neutered and has had his shots and vet checkup.  He has a clean bill of health and is ready for his new home.

Willie’s Diet – Our Obese Rescue Pomeranian

Clockwise from top;
Sweet Potato, Mixed Frozen Veggies, Oatmeal, Natural Choice Lite,
Merrick Senior Medley, Fat Free Yogurt.  Center:  Carrots for snack.
There have been a few inquiries about what we are feeding Willie to help him shed a few pounds.  He seems to be doing well with the change in diet and has adjusted without any stomach upset.

He has gone from 14.5 to 14 in 2 weeks.  I had hoped to be a few more ounces along, but Mother Nature threw a wrench in those plans with this winter in ?March weather.  Only managed to get 3 walks in.

He is still VERY food motivated and a little piggy!  But his meals are twice as large as he was receiving using only dry kibble (he was getting 1/4 cup twice a day), so he is getting fuller and not so much a piggy.

He actually walked by our dogs bowl without diving in after I forgot to pick it up.  I was shocked!  The first day he was here he ate all 3 of our dogs dinner before I realized it.  And that was after he had eaten his!

Willie’s meals & snacks

• 1 Tbsp Fat Free Yogurt, plain
• 1 Tbsp Oatmeal
• 1 Tbsp Frozen / Fresh Vegetables, carrots, peas, green beans, broccoli, little amount of corn
• 1 Tbsp Sweet Potatoes
• 1/2 can High protein, low calorie food, currently Merrick Grain Free Senior Medley
• 1/8 cup High quality dry food, about 10-12 kernels for crunch. currently Nutro Natural Choice – Lite – Lamb & Whole Brown Rice
• 3-5 Fresh Carrots, Snacks – # varies depending on carrot size/width, other snacks given
• 3-5 Green Beans, Snacks -# varies based on size, other snacks given
Notes
When all ingredients are mixed together it makes 1/2 cup.

Willie is fed this twice a day in addition to receiving plenty of carrots and green beans as treats.

Each meal has the wet and dry food as a base.  The other ingredients can be increased, decreased, left out as desired as long as meal totals 1/2 cup.  I occasionally mix in a couple slices of banana or some chopped red apple.

He also gets 2 – 5 calorie mini bones cookies at bedtime (these are what his mom gave him, so we won’t take these away, we just cut him from 3 to 2).

He seems to enjoy the moister diet. His water consumption has decreased to a normal level.

I either make up a breakfast bowl for him and place in the fridge for the next day while I’m making his dinner, or

Mix up a few days worth in Tupperware and measure out approx 1/2 cup at mealtimes (adding the dry kernels to the top).
